Portmeirion Potteries - Susan Williams-Ellis

Magic Journey - The underwater world of Susan Williams-Ellis An exhibition of paintings and ceramics

Susan Williams-Ellis is a one-woman dynamo. Aged 84, daughter of Clough Williams-Ellis, architect of Portmeirion in Wales (where she has also played a major role) Susan has never rested on her laurels. The designer/founder of Portmeirion Potteries PLC, Susan Williams-Ellis's world famous ceramic shapes and decorations such as Botanic Garden and Totem, are just part of an amazing creative force whose work still encompasses contemporary textile, furniture, rugs and jewellery designs.

The subject of a recent BBC documentary, over the past 20 years, Susan Williams-Ellis has had another private passion, one for the underwater world of coral reefs. Magic Journey is the first ever public exhibition of Susan's aquatic work. From the Maldives to Hawaii, The Red Sea and Tahiti to the Great Barrier Reef, Susan has recorded this magical world; its marine life and, more recently, its sad decay due to pollution.

Using a snorkel and fins, Susan's unique creative process involves her initially using a waterproof board and plastic paper. Often staying in the water for hours she records what she sees with a pencil. Once back on dry land, she transfers her first image onto a fresh sheet, consulting reference books and works in oil pastel to capture the colours still fresh in her memory. From this she produces a finished painting using acrylic colour on a textured board.

A multi-media creative, Susan's has also adapted these wonderful images onto ceramic plates, which will also be on show. For collectors there will a chance to purchase a limited edition plate, produced by Portmeirion, celebrating this special one-off exhibition.
