Design Led Business 24/7 Project
Queensberry Hunt - Their credentials set them at the forefront of contemporary product design, within the modern ceramic industry. Working both within the industry and at the cutting edge of design as professors and lecturers in ceramics at the RCA, the award-winning design team of David Queensberry and Martin Hunt have continued to set the standards in modern product design. Renowned worldwide as two of the greatest commercial product designers currently working (in 1992 The Victoria & Albert Museum honoured the two designers by hosting an exhibition of their work), David Queensberry and Martin Hunt were encouraged to work alongside Portmeirion to create a new range of shapes as part of the Design Council's Design Led Business 24/7 Project, which involves 11 high profile companies within the UK and aims to look objectively at companies that are involved within the homewares industry.
The project will stimulate the international competitiveness of UK manufacturers by using design to add value to products and services to help exploit new market opportunities and to ascertain where a pro-active change or adaptation of the current design processes can improve each company's performance.
Acknowledging the strong British design heritage that world-famous patterns such as Botanic Garden and Pomona have created for the Portmeirion brand, it was decided that the company needed to create a new shape that kept abreast with the dramatic changes in dining trends, both in terms of our access to global foods and the need for function and immediacy within a modern leisure culture.
The first outcome of this new working partnership between Portmeirion and Queensberry Hunt was the Sovereign shape. This shape which includes serving items such as bowls, platters and two vase shapes, was launched across all of Portmeirion's main product lines during 2003.
The second, Soho, is the first full collection of Queensberry Hunt shapes, addressing a truly new modern lifestyle ethic for Spring 2004.
